Strength for the long weekend ahead

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13.

One of the first passages I memorized. Later drilled into my head thanks to another camp song.

And a reminder that when the newspaper job turns into a 12-hour day because of a double slaying and a kid allegedly trying to burn down his school, and going home means rushing to camp to cook a late dinner for 100 teens who are new to camp … yeah, all the strength I think I have within me is tapped. If it comes from within me, it’s because of who is within me.

And it helps to have a wonderful wife by my side, as well as great friends who work here with us. Sometimes, it’s such a pleasure.

We have a great group of teens with us for six meals this weekend. It means our break of nine hours of more will come sometime Sunday midafternoon, but we’re thrilled to see God using this place so abundantly this winter. And while this is a new church for us, it was great to see familiar faces.

Here’s what we’ll be feeding them:

Friday late dinner: Pizza & Wings

  • Pepperoni, spicy sausage, bell peppers, ham/bacon and white pizzas
  • Medium wings and barbecue wings
  • Potato chips
  • Celery sticks, baby carrots and blue cheese
  • Chocolate chip cookies

Saturday breakfast:

  • Waffles
  • Chocolate chip pancakes
  • Sausage links
  • Cheesy hash browns
  • Chocolate and chocolate-crumb doughnuts
  • Fresh fruit
  • Cold cereal and milk

Saturday lunch:

  • Hot dogs with meatsauce
  • French fries with homemade cheese sauce
  • Barbecue baked beans
  • Patriot pickles
  • Dill coleslaw
  • Chocolate cheesecake brownies
  • Fresh fruit

Saturday dinner:

  • Ziti with homemade marinara
  • Homemade meatsauce
  • Broccoli with Parmesan cheese
  • Honey-glazed carrots
  • Warm challah-style dinner rolls
  • Mixed greens with cucumbers, carrots and grape tomatoes
  • Homemade confetti cake

Sunday breakfast:

  • Scrambled eggs
  • Bacon
  • Tater tots
  • English muffins
  • Julie’s rockin’ oatmeal
  • Fresh fruit
  • Cold cereal and milk

Sunday lunch:

  • Hot turkey sandwiches or hot roast beef sandwiches
  • Mashed potatoes with gravy
  • Buttered corn
  • Sauteed peas with caramelized onions
  • Cold green bean and bell pepper salad
  • Chocolate mousse
  • Fresh fruit
